The Refractometer offers a reliable and accurate way of determining true salinity in the aquarium and fish farm environment. Not only is it quick and easy to use but it is also very straightforward to calibrate.

The refractometer will give readings in both scales of measurement i.e. specific gravity (S.G.) and salinity (S). Automatic temperature compensation is achieved by way of a bi-metallic strip inside the rugged housing.
Before carrying out a test or series of tests, it is necessary to calibrate the refractometer. Calibration is performed by setting the zero point using pure water. For best results, it is recommended that a sample of the water used as the diluent in the fluid to be tested is used for calibration. The refractometer may then be used to determine the combination of the fluid itself.

Sufficient for 240 °dGH. Most ornamental fish kept in aquariums originate from areas with soft water. The sera gH-Test makes it easy to monitor the total hardness and select fish species that can preferably be kept in the available water.

Sufficient for 240 °dKH. In a community aquarium the carbonate hardness should be between 5 and 10 °dkH (saltwater 8 to 12 °dkH) in order to guarantee sufficient pH value stabilization. The sera kH-test makes it easy to determine the carbonate hardness.

For approx. 80 measurements. Tap water usually has a pH between 7.5 and 8.5. Most fish kept in freshwater aquariums originate from neutral or slightly acidic water (pH between 6 and 7). Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika cichlids prefer slightly alkaline pH values (7.5 - 8.5). The optimal pH for saltwater aquariums is in the range from 8.2 - 8.4.

For approx. 50 measurements in fresh and salt water. Useful bacteria convert ammonium to nitrate via nitrite. Nitrite, the intermediate of the pollutant breakdown, is a strong blood poison which often enrichs in newly set-up aquariums. By means of the sera nitrite-test it is easy to determine the level of toxic nitrite. For newly set-up aquariums and after cleaning the filter system, we recommend sera nitrivec. sera nitrivec consists of useful bacteria that break down ammonium and nitrite.

For approx. 50 measurements. Nitrate is the final breakdown product of nitrogen-containing pollutants. Nitrate levels above 50 mg/l are not only harmful to the fish but also strongly promote algae growth. Thus, the nitrate level should be checked regularly by means of the sera nitrate-test. Too high nitrate levels are lowered by planting rapidly growing plants, more frequent water changes and installing the a Denitrifing Filter. 

For approx. 65 measurements. Iron is an essential nutrient for water plants. Fertilization according to the requirements of the plants is only possible if the iron level is monitored. The sera iron-test is easy to use. Fertilization is safely and econommically achieved by sera florena. The iron concentration should be 1 mg/l immediately after fertilization. 

For approx. 50 measurements in fresh and salt water. Useful bacteria convert nitrogen-containing waste products into ammonium or ammonia. The sera ammonium/ammonia-test tells you the overall concentration of ammonium and ammonia. The actual concentration of toxic free ammonia is easy to calculate from the measured level and the pH value by means of the enclosed calculation chart. sera nitrivec (freshwater) resp. sera ammovec (saltwater) break down ammonium and ammonia. As an immediate measure the pH value is to be lowered by means of sera pH-minus.

For approx. 40 measurements. Phosphate strongly promotes algae growth. Thus, it should be regularly checked by means of the sera phosphate-test and removed with sera phosvec. The phosphate level should be below 1 mg/l (fresh water) resp. 0.1 mg/l (salt water). In case of high phosphate levels we recommend planting more plants and carrying out water changes more frequently.

Electronic instrument for precisely measuring the pH value in fresh and saltwater. The handy sera ISFET pH meter is ideally suited for owners of many aquariums, breeders and the specialized trade.
The sera reference electrode and the O-rings for the reference electrode and the casing are available as spare parts. The sera test solution pH 6.9 is available separately.

Silicate supports the growth of diatoms in salt and fresh water aquariums. The sera silicate test kit allows to reliably monitor the silicate level.

Silicate levels above 1 mg/l should be bound with sera marin silicate clear.

Approximaterly 50 tests - Alkalinity 2.8 meq/litre or 8dkH

• Calcium is not the only substance needed to form the skeletal material of corals and allow calcareous algae to grow. Carbonate and bicarbonate are also needed and these two substances can have a major effect on stabilising or buffering pH levels in the aquarium in the correct range of 8.1 to 8.4.
• The total carbonate and bicarbonate concentration is also called alkalinity or carbonate hardness and for a stable system the alkalinity should not fluctuate by more than 5% from the optimum level of approx. 2.8 meq/L i.e a maximum fluctuation of 0.14 meq/L.
• The Salifert test is sensitive enough to detect small changes in levels of alkalinity, measuring in steps of 0.1 meq/L and demonstrating a very sharp colour change.
• Sufficient for 100 to 200 tests.
• The Salifert KH + pH buffer additive makes correction of the alkalinity or carbonate hardness simple and does not upset the pH of the system

Approximaterly 50 tests - Calcium 420-450 mg/litre

• Calcium is a major constituent of coralline algae, the skeletal material of hard corals and the skeletal needles of soft/leather corals. In many cases too low a calcium concentration retards coral and coralline algae growth.
• Calcium also fulfils many important biological functions.
• In a healthy aquarium, the growth and multiplication of corals, calcareous algae and other organisms can result in calcium depletion. To maintain a stable environment it is important that the calcium content should not fluctuate by more than 15 mg/L from the optimum range of 420 - 450 mg/L so regular testing should be carried out.
• This means that any calcium test used should have an accuracy of significantly less than 15mg/L otherwise it will be difficult to monitor such fluctuations.
• The Salifert test kit measures in steps of 5 mg/L and has an accuracy of 10 mg/L.
• The colour change is precise, detecting small but significant fluctuations in the concentration of calcium.
• The test is not affected by magnesium.

Approximaterly 50 tests - Magnesium 1350-1500 mg/litre

• When there are insufficient areas of a tank which are deprived of oxygen (anaerobic zones) or denitrification is not taking place properly, nitrate will build up. This can also happen I an aquarium where the biological loading on the system is causing an imbalance e.g is there is excessive livestock for the aquarium volume or over feeding is occurring.
• The build up of nitrate can result in unwanted algae growth and the slowing down of coral growth.
• The nitrate concentration in a reef aquarium should be lower than 1 mg/L, although fish only aquariums would usually have a higher concentration.
• Just as with nitrite, many nitrate test kits are prone to amine interference which can make the levels of nitrate appear much lower than they actually are.
• The Salifert test kit does not suffer from such interference and gives accurate and quick results with a total testing time of less than 3 minutes.
• The test kit’s range goes from a very low to a very high nitrate concentration (approx. 0.2 - 100 mg/L as total nitrate).
• Sufficient for 50 tests.
